Dr. Maggie Scull:
“The Catholic Church and the Northern Ireland Troubles.”

Dr Maggie Scull is author of The Catholic Church and the Northern Ireland Troubles, 1968-1998(Oxford University Press, 2019 ) and Irish Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She has previously been a Teaching Fellow in Modern British and Irish History at King’s College, London, where she also earned her Ph.D. in Modern History. Her interdisciplinary research explores the relationship between religion and politics in the contemporary period, examining the ‘soft power’ religious leaders still possessed in British and Irish politics after the Second World War. Her latest project examines the role of funerals during the Northern Irish ‘Troubles’. In 2016, she co-organized the ‘Rethinking the 1980/81 Hunger Strikes’ Project with Dr Alison Garden, which examined the legacy of the strikes for British and Irish politics and culture.
