IS IT ABOUT A BICYCLE? – WRITERS IN CONVERSATION

Adrian Duncan in conversation with artist and curator Michele Horrigan

Sunday, January 17

Is it About a Bicycle?: Writers in Conversation is a new series presented by Solas Nua that brings together contemporary Irish writers or writers based in Ireland, with leaders and experts from a variety of sectors to explore their shared interests across disciplines. The title comes from Flann O’Brien’s classic comic novel, The Third Policeman, a meandering tale about the nature of time, death, and the absurdity of human existence.

Adrian Duncan is an artist and writer based in Ireland and Berlin. His debut novel Love Notes from a German Building Site was published by The Lilliput Press and Head of Zeus in 2019. It won the 2019 John McGahern Book Prize. Duncan’s second novel A Sabbatical in Leipzig was published by The Lilliput Press in 2020. His collection of short stories Midfield Dynamo will appear with The Lilliput Press in March 2021.

In 2020 he exhibited, in collaboration with Feargal Ward, a large-scale film/sculptural installation work titled The Soil Became Scandinavian, at VISUAL, Carlow. In 2019 they co-directed a music video for Joy Division’s Day of the Lords as part of the Unknown Pleasures Reimagined project. In 2020 his and Ward’s film Tension Structures received its North American premier at Hot Docs, Toronto.

Michele Horrigan is an Irish artist and curator. Her installation, photographic and video artworks keenly explore narratives and potentials of environment and place. She studied art at the University of Ulster, Belfast and the Städelschule, Frankfurt. Since 2006 she is founder and curator of Askeaton Contemporary Arts, enabling over one hundred artist residencies and projects to be realised in the west of Ireland. She is editor of A.C.A. PUBLIC, a publication venture exploring the many meanings and relationships between art and the public realm. Recent exhibitions were presented at EVA International, Limerick; Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, Santa Cruz, and Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin.

This online event is free and open to the public. If, however, you wish to make a donation to support the Global Irish Studies series of free lectures and seminars, it will be gratefully received. Please go to our Giving page to make a tax-free donation or click on the button below
