The Healey Family Distinguished Fellowship in Irish Writing

Global Irish Studies is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the new position of Healey Family Distinguished Fellow in Irish Writing for the Spring 2027 semester (January to May, 2027).

The Fellowship, which will be offered annually, is funded by a major gift from the Healey Family Foundation, which supports the philanthropy of Thomas J. (C’64) and Meg Healey, their daughter and son-in-law Megan and John Hagerty, and their son, Jeremy and his wife, Megan Healey (C’95). We are very grateful to the Healey Family, and especially Jeremy Healey, for their leadership in supporting Global Irish Studies, and we look forward to partnering with them to bring their vision to fruition. Speaking at the announcement of the gift, Dean of Georgetown’s College of Arts and Sciences, David Edelstein, noted that “Global Irish Studies is already a jewel within the College of Arts & Sciences…It is innovative, global and interdisciplinary — all the best of what the College aspires to be.” “The Healey Family Distinguished Fellow,” he added, “will only enhance the program to the benefit of our entire community, especially our students.”

The endowed fund will bring a new visiting fellow to Georgetown for one semester each academic year, starting in the Spring 2027 semester. The Healey Family Distinguished Fellow will be a writer in any genre (poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, drama, etc.), who is based in Ireland or whose work deals substantially with Ireland. The Fellow will teach an undergraduate course of their choosing on contemporary Irish writing and culture in the Department of English.

While we are hiring now for Spring 2027 only, we are also seeking expressions of interest from writers who may be looking to take up this position in Fall 2027, Spring 2028, Fall 2028, or Spring 2029. We ask that those interested in a later semester send in a full application, indicating when they will be available. We hope to be able to set up a pipeline of fellows for upcoming years (pending annual reconfirmation of the post).
